What is a kettlebell?
The kettlebell or girya (Russian: гиря) is a traditional Russian cast iron weight looking somewhat like a cannonball with a handle. The kettlebell has become a popular exercise tool in the United States due largely to the efforts of strength and flexibility coach Pavel Tsatsouline and also by World Champion and world record holder Valery Fedorenko. Many companies produce their own brands of kettlebells and kettlebell exercise programs. Some modern kettlebells feature adjustable weights. Kettlebell workouts are intended to increase strength, endurance, agility and balance, challenging both the muscular and cardiovascular system with dynamic, total-body movements.

Kettlebell lifting has been nationally recognized and played throughout the world for decades, and its competitive exercises are the 'Two Kettlebell Jerk' and 'One Kettlebell Snatch'; performed in that order for ten minutes each. The competitor with the highest overall score wins.

In recent years, kettlebells have become popular among athletes, especially mixed martial artists and those in the entertainment community. More info here

If kettlebell training is so great how come they are not in every gym in the country?
The main goal of a chain fitness club is to make money and keep liability costs low. The trend in most clubs is to have more machines and less free weights. While machines are not as effective as free weights, they are much easier to use and require minimal instruction. Thus, less of a need for highly skilled trainers. If a gym adds kettlebells they also have to pay to have their trainers educated in proper kettlebell instruction. They much rather spend money on their sales staff as most of the income health clubs generate are from membership sales. The potential client that has not signed up yet is often more important than the client that has already joined. Many gyms spend the majority of their income on attracting new members not getting results for existing members. Now there is nothing wrong with making money as that is an important goal for every business. Regardless, few gyms realize that they could make more money by providing exceptional offerings to their clients. Unfortunately, the clients that gyms prefer are the ones that sign up for a year and never show up. The ones that actually use the gym regularly are costly. No doubt a more progressive gyms could make a lot of money with kettlebell classes. Especially kettlebell classes targeted towards women. Finally, the last thing a fitness club wants you to know is that you can get in great shape at home with a few kettlebells. You only need one or two kettlebells to get in great shape. Just about anyone can afford this and has room for a few bells that can easily go in a closet. However, very few people could afford to have expensive machines at home. Thus it s better to convince the client that he she needs expensive equipment to achieve his or her goals. Personally, you are better off in smaller gyms which focus more time on their clients. (from Mike Mahler's FAQ)

Is kettlebell training dangerous?
When using any kind of free weight, barbell, dumbell, the risk of injury is always present. This is why we strongly advocate the instruction and guidance of an experienced and certified kettlebell trainer. I have clients coming from other gyms who have injured their backs, hands and shoulders due to the trainers learning from books, DVDs and online videos without going through a proper training course themselves. Please do yourself a favour and seek out professional, experienced kettlebell instruction. This way you will benefit from the training and prevent injuries (intangible benefit). I have included a list of known certified kettlebell trainers in Malaysia on this website for your convenience.

You can join at any time. Beginner's classes are your safest bet. It is here you learn the terminology, protocol and technique of the exercises. Do I need wristbands?
Some clients, usually the ladies, experience discomfort in the forearm/wrist area where the kettlebell makes direct contact with the bony surface of their arms. This is easily remedied by wearing a pair of wrist bands that are available at all sport stores.
Why don't you wear gloves?
Kettlebell handling requires tactile sensitivity and response. With the gloves, while it may prevent callouses and blisters, it will not give you the immediate feedback that you are losing your grip strength. Also, some of the gloves' fabric tends to bunch up, accelerating the development of blisters and callouses on the hands. Generally, we will use sports tape and chalk to work on the grip.
